Ok this is a topic that many have let fly under the radar. I suppose because DC comics picked it up and it really should have stayed exclusively a United Kingdom kind of thing.
I really think there should be more emphasis on regional acceptance of a series of stories, espically if the story is specificallly catgorizing issues of a country and region. This series touches on a lot of subjects that are affecting the U.S. as of today, but clearly these socio-econimic discussions poised in the series have more of a touchstone feel when we apply them to where they belong.
This is half the reason why snap shots in the daily U.S. news papers reporting on issues in China concerning American government workers imprisoned for unacceptable behavior in those countries go under the radar, and are misrepresented and ignored. Especially when the woman is quoting lines like: "Save Sally," and only a few would have fit the context togther.

They did not mention the quotation I remember in this article, which is a shame, but the moment I read that head line, "Save Sandy," I was immediatly drawn to a chapter in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series in which a political prisoner is sending texts and using tech inside of a prison in order to reach the outside world about her predictment. The parallels where uncanny and I thought they were worth mentioning and made this story of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," all the more alluring.
To this day I am made to wonder if Sandy ever made it home, but I am not going to give up hope. Especially when I have similar stories in the greater states of the U.S.A.
Oh yes, education is oh so important in our brave new world.
